The Christmas Bird Count (CBC) is a long-running community science event. You can add to more than a century of community-gathered data by participating. Learn more about the history of the Christmas Bird Count.
All participants must register in Volunteer Local to participate in the Boise Christmas Bird Count.
There is a specific methodology to the CBC, Each count takes place in an established 15-mile diameter circle. Volunteers count every bird they see or hear all day. It's not just a species tally—all birds are counted all day, giving an indication of the total number of birds in the circle that day.
All data will be collected in Cornell Lab eBird. Not every counter will need to use eBird, but many will.
Boise CBC Orientation December 16 - We are holding an online orientation for all Zone Counters with the Zone Leaders on December 16 from 7:00 - 8:00 pm. We would like all counters to attend. You will get the Zoom link when you register.
There are 14 geographic Zones in the Boise Christmas Bird Count Circle. You will sign up to count in ONE of them. Go here to see the Zone boundaries.
Each Zone will have a Leader and an appropriate number of Team Members to cover the routes. You will sign up for a specific Zone. Please read the description of the Zone count to make sure it suits you.
Alternatively, if your home is within the boundaries of the circle and you use eBird, you can stay at home and report the birds that visit your yard/feeder on count day as long as you registered in Volunteer Local. Feeder Count registration.
The fun After-Count Dinner will be at Idaho Pizza Co. at 5150 Overland Rd. from 5-7:30. We ask that you let us know if you are coming. Donations will be accepted.
